Plumbers and Steamfitters Recruit Apprentices

South Glens Falls, NY (December 09, 2011) -

The Plumbers & Steamfitters Journeymen & Apprentice Training Committee, Local Union #773, will conduct a recruitment from January 9, 2012 through December 10, 2012 for 10 plumber and steamfitter apprentices, State Labor Commissioner Colleen C. Gardner announced today.

Applications can be obtained at the Local Union #773, 30 Blue Bird Road, South Glens Falls, NY (Contact: Alexis Flewelling at 518-792-9157) or at L.H. LaPlante Co., Inc., 52 Main Street, Plattsburgh, NY (Contact: Chris Golden at 518-561-8003), the second Monday of each month from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period.  Completed applications must be received no later than the following Friday at 12 p.m., following the second Monday of each month.

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must have a high school diploma or general equivalency diploma (G.E.D)-must provide proof no later than time of indenture.
  • Must be physically able to perform the work required as determined by attesting to the physical requirements listed on the ‘Application for Apprenticeship':
    • Able to lift and/or carry 75-100 pounds without assistance.
    • Able to help move piping materials up or down a flight of stairs for any period of time.
    • Capable of helping move and set heavy equipment.
    • Able to climb a ladder and/or work off a ladder at heights of 10' or more.
    • Able to work in crawl spaces under a building or home.
    • Able to work in extreme temperatures, hot or cold, (ex: boiler room, outside).
    • Able to work in dirty or damp places.
  • Must have a valid driver's license.
  • Must sign the Pipe Trades Apprenticeship affidavit.
  • Must have lived for one year in the Counties of Warren, Washington, Saratoga, Essex, Clinton, Franklin or Hamilton.
  • Must complete an aptitude test.
  • Must provide military transfer card or discharge form DD-214 (when applicable)-must provide proof no later than time of indenture.
  • Must be able to purchase text material for use in related instruction classes as required for approx. $100 each year.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner.  Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability or marital status.  Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs.  Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
