Utica, NY (May 11, 2012) -

The Ironworkers Joint Apprenticeship Committee District II, Local Union #440-Utica, will conduct a recruitment from June 4, 2012 through May 31, 2013 for five ironworker (outside) apprentices, State Labor Commissioner Colleen C. Gardner announced today. 

 Applications will be available at Local Union #440, 801 Varick Street (2nd floor), Utica, NY from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period. Applications can also be obtained by calling the union hall at (315) 735-4531. All applications must be received no later than May 31, 2013.

The Committee requires that applicants:

• Must be at least 18 years old.
• Must have a high school diploma or general equivalency diploma (G.E.D.).
• Must be physically able to perform the work, as determined by a physical and drug test administered by a physician after an offer of employment is made.
• Must be able to lift 50-100 lbs., climb and work from heights in excess of 100 feet.
• Must be a resident of Local 440's jurisdiction. This includes all of Oneida, Herkimer, Otsego and Lewis counties, and the following townships:
  • Madison County - townships of Eaton, Madison, Lebanon, Earlville, Brookfield, Smyrna, Sherburne, Columbus, Plymouth, N. Norwich and New Berlin.
  • Hamilton County - townships of Indian Lake, Arietta, Lake Pleasant, Speculator and Morehouse.
  • Fulton County - townships of Oppenheim, Startford, and Ephratah.
  • Montgomery County - townships of Minden, St. Johnsville, Palatine and Canajoharie.
• Must provide proof of their ability to work in the United States, if selected for the program.
• Must provide proof of: diploma/GED, birth certificate, DD214 (if a military veteran), current certifications, driver's license and Social Security card.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner.  Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability or marital status.  Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs.  Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
