Plumbers & Steamfitters Recruit Apprentices

Rochester, NY (December 15, 2011) -

The Plumbing and Heating Joint Apprenticeship and Training Council of Rochester, Local Union #13, will conduct a recruitment from January 3, 2012 through December 4, 2012 for 10 steamfitter and 10 plumber apprentices, State Labor Commissioner Colleen C. Gardner announced today.

Applications can be obtained, in person only, at the Local Union #13, 1850 Mt. Read Blvd., Rochester, NY, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. or 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. the first Tuesday of each month, excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period. The applicant must attest to the following criteria in an affidavit.

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old (at time of application).
  • Must have a high school diploma plus obtain a final grade of "C" or better in Algebra and Geometry or have a GED with a minimum Math score of 55.
  • Must pass a physical exam including a drug test at the expense of the sponsor at time of offer of employment and prior to indenture into apprenticeship.
  • Must be physically able to perform the work required and attest to the following:
    • Includes climbing, heavy lifting (in excess of 80lbs. on occasion), confined areas, heights (includes ladders, lifts & scaffolds), working inside or outdoors, in industrial plants, institutions, commercial building and power plants.
  • Must be a citizen of the USA or legally eligible to work in the USA.
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from the job site.
  • Must complete Math exam with a score of 70% or higher at the time of application.
  • Must be a resident for one year in the jurisdiction of UA Local Union #13- Allegany, Genesee, Livingston, Monroe, Ontario, Orleans, Seneca, Steuben, Wayne or Yates County.
  • Must appear for an interview on scheduled date.
  • Must have a valid NYS drivers license - apprentices may be required to drive company vehicle.
  • Must supply DD214 military transfer or discharge (if applicable).
  • Proof of following items must be presented at the time of application - minimum age of 18, H.S. diploma with transcript of grades including Algebra & Geometry or GED scores with minimum math score of 55, transcripts from any other educational program that the applicant would like to be considered, current NYS Drivers License, proof of residence in Local Union #13 jurisdiction and DD214 military transfer or discharge (if applicable).

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner.  Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability or marital status.  Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs.  Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
