Carpenters Recruit Apprentices

Rock Tavern, NY (December 01, 2011) -

The Empire State Carpenters Apprenticeship Committee Local Union #19 will conduct a recruitment from December 1, 2011 through November 29, 2012 for five carpenter apprentices, State Labor Commissioner Colleen C. Gardner announced today.

Applicants must apply in person at Local Union #19, 52 Stone Castle Road Suite 1, Rock Tavern, NY, on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period.

Applicants must attest to the qualifications as listed below in a signed statement. They must also provide required documents of proof when offered a position to enter the Apprenticeship program. Failure to provide the required proofs: Diploma/GED; DD214 (military); motor vehicle picture ID, will result in immediate dismissal from the program.

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 17 years old.
  • Must be a high school graduate or have a general equivalency diploma (G.E.D.) as recognized by local school authorities (transcript required from the school).
  • Must be physically able to perform the work required as determined by the Carpenters Apprenticeship School and must meet following criteria:
    • Must have ability to work on scaffolds and in confined spaces.
    • Must have ability to work under conditions of inclement weather: rain, snow, cold, heat, direct sunlight.
    • Must have ability to perform constant repetitive motions; climb and work from heights, lift items over a set weight; stand and scoop for prolonged periods of time, etc.
  • Must be a resident of Columbia, Dutchess, Orange, Sullivan or Ulster counties for at least six (6) months and provide proof of residency.
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from various job sites and Joint Apprentice Committee School.
  • Must take an employment drug test at an approved facility at the committee's expense.
  • Must join the union if accepted for the program and be willing to sign indenture agreement and comply with the same.
  • Must take Empire State Carpenters Apprenticeship Committee Entry Math Test.
  • Must appear for personal interview.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner.  Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability or marital status.  Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs.  Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
