Laborers Recruit Apprentices

Melville, NY (May 13, 2011) -

The General Building Laborers Local Union #66 will conduct a recruitment from May 25, 2011 through May 23, 2012 for 20 skilled construction craft laborer apprentices, State Labor Commissioner Colleen C. Gardner announced today.

Applications can be obtained at the Local Union #66, 1600 Walt Whitman Road, Melville, NY from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays of each month, excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period.  Applicants must come in person to fill out the application during the allotted time.

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must have a high school diploma or general equivalency diploma (G.E.D) - provide proof after acceptance.
  • Must be physically able to perform the work required as determined by an affidavit attesting to their ability to safely perform laborers work which includes:
    • Must be able to lift and carry an aggregate of approximately 94 lbs. for 25 ft. and restack to a height of approximately 54 inches.
    • Load with a shovel, approximately ½ cubic yard of material into a wheel barrow, wheel it 30 ft. and deposit it into a container.
    • Must work at heights of 10 ft. or greater.
    • Must work in confined spaces.
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from various jobsites and JAC school.
  • Must have a valid driver's license; apprentice may have to drive a company vehicle.
  • Must pass a written examination - new entrant assessment.
  • Must have lived for at least six months in Nassau or Suffolk County.
  • Must appear for an interview when notified.
  • Must become a union member if accepted into the apprenticeship program.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
