Sheet Metal Workers Recruit Apprentices

Long Island City, NY (August 15, 2011) -

The Sheet Metal Workers International Association Local Union # 137, will conduct a recruitment from August 22, 2011 through August 14, 2012 for ten sheet metal worker (sign hanger/rigger) apprentices, State Labor Commissioner Colleen C. Gardner announced today.

Applications can be obtained at Local Union #137, 21-42 44th Drive, Long Island City, NY, from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., each Monday of the month, excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period. 

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least18 years old.
  • Must have a high school diploma or general equivalency diploma (GED) as recognized by official school authorities.
  • Must sign a work specific affidavit, on the ability to perform the work and or trade which includes the following:
    • Working with sharp objects, hazardous machinery and being exposed to loud noise and respiratory irritants.
    • It may also include prolonged standing, climbing, walking and repeated squatting and bending.
    • Working under extreme temperature exposure ranging from 0 degrees (outside work in the winter) to 140 degrees (the inside of a ceiling in the summer). Additionally, everyday work may be at such temperatures and in confined areas where movement is greatly limited.
    • Expected to lift and move heavy and bulky objects and equipment up to 100 lbs, and will also work from ladders, pipe scaffolds, swinging scaffolds and unprotected heights, which may exceed 100 feet.
  • Must be willing to travel within the jurisdiction of the Local Union # 137 jurisdiction (the five boroughs of New York City, Nassau and Suffolk Counties) to shop and/or jobsite.
  • Must have a valid New York State Driver's License to operate company owned vehicles to and from job sites.
  • Must pass a math and reading survey.

Special Instructions: Applicants must bring proof of high school diploma, GED or equivalent, and NYS Driver's License.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner.  Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability or marital status.  Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs.  Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
