Tile, Marble and Terrazo Workers Recruit Apprentices

Long Island City, NY (September 20, 2012) -

The Tile, Marble and Terrazzo Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee Local Union #7 will conduct a recruitment from October  10, 2012 through September 25, 2013 for three marble carver, cutter and setter apprentices; three terrazzo worker apprentices; and three tile setter apprentices, State Labor Commissioner Peter M. Rivera announced today.

Applications will be available in-person only at the International Masonry Institute,

12-07 44th Avenue, Long Island City, NY, from 8:00 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. on 10/10/12, 12/19/12, 2/27/13, 03/27/13, 05/29/13, and 09/25/13. Applications may also be obtained at 3281 Route 206 South, Bordentown, NJ, from 8:00 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. on 11/28/12, 1/23/13, 4/24/13, and 06/26/13. Doors will open at 8:00 a.m.  There will be no admittance after 8:30 a.m. Processing will be until 10:00 a.m.  Applications and exam will be done on day of recruitment.

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must have a high school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED).
  • Must take a Basic Assessment Skills Exam.
  • Must be physically capable of performing the essential functions of the apprenticeship program without posing a threat to the health or safety of self or others.
  • Must have own transportation because the sponsor is a two-state union.
  • Must sign an affidavit for physical performance, which includes the following:
  • Working with hand tools, power tools, and irritants.
  • Prolonged standing, climbing, walking, repeated squatting, stretching, bending and working on knees.
  • Working under extreme temperatures, ranging from freezing (inside and outside of buildings) to extreme heat in the summer.
  • Working in such temperatures and in such confined areas that movement is greatly limited.
  • Lifting and moving heavy supplies and equipment up to 100 pounds, and working from ladders, scaffolds and personnel lifts that may exceed 100 feet.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner.  Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability or marital status.  Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs.  Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
