PLUMBERS AND STEAMFITTERS RECRUIT APPRENTICES

Ithaca, NY (July 11, 2011) -

The Plumbers & Steamfitters Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee Local Union # 267, will conduct a recruitment from July 11, 2011 through June 4, 2012 for six plumber and steamfitter apprentices, State Labor Commissioner Colleen C. Gardner announced today.

Applications can be obtained at the Local Union # 267, 701 West State Street, Ithaca, NY, from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., the first working Monday of each month, excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period.

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must have a high school diploma or general equivalency diploma (G.E.D) – transcript required, after selection, prior to indenture.
  • Must pass a drug test, at the sponsor’s expense, at the time of appointment.
  • Must be a resident of Chemung, Cortland, Schuyler, Steuben, Tioga or Tompkins Counties.
  • Must have reliable transportation to work sites and related instruction classes.
  • Must be physically able to perform the work required as determined by signed affidavit - which includes the following:
    • Working with sharp objects, hazardous machinery, and possible exposure to loud noise and respiratory irritants. It may also include prolonged standing, walking and repeated squatting and/or bending.
    • Working under exposure to temperature extremes such as being outside on winter days or inside in confined areas where high temperatures can be reached can also be expected as part of everyday activity.
    • The lifting and/or moving of heavy objects and equipment, working off of ladders and scaffolds, and working in wet and muddy conditions is also to be expected.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
