Laborers Recruit Apprentices

Elmira Heights, NY (June 27, 2011) -

The Laborers International Union of North America Local Union #785-Elmira Region, will conduct a recruitment from July 27, 2011 through June 27, 2012 for one skilled construction craft laborer apprentices, State Labor Commissioner Colleen C. Gardner announced today.

Applications will be available at the Local Union #785 office, 157 Prescott Avenue, Elmira Heights, NY from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., the fourth Wednesday of each month, excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period.   Applicants must apply in person. 

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must have a high school diploma, a General Equivalency Diploma (G.E.D.) or equivalent.
  • Must be physically able to perform the work required as determined by physical examination after accepted in the program which includes a drug screen. 
  • Must sign affidavit for physical performance, which includes:
    • Working with sharp objects, hazardous machinery, and possible exposure to loud noise and respiratory irritants. It may also include prolonged lifting, standing, walking, and repeated squatting and/or bending.
    • Working under exposure to temperature extremes such as being outside on winter days or inside confined areas where high temperatures can be reached can also be expected as part of everyday activity.
    • The lifting and/or moving of heavy objects and equipment and working off ladders and scaffolds at protected heights is also expected.
  • Must have valid driver's license - apprentices will be required to operate contractor's vehicles.
  • Must be able to get to work sites throughout a three-county area: Chemung, Schuyler, and Steuben.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner.  Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability or marital status.  Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs.  Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
