Laborers Recruit Apprentices

Binghamton, NY (June 27, 2011) -

The Laborers International Union of North America Local Union #785-Binghamton Region, will conduct a recruitment from July 1, 2011 through June 1, 2012 for four skilled construction craft laborer apprentices, State Labor Commissioner Colleen C. Gardner announced today.

Applications will be available at the Local Union #785 office, 98 Main Street, Binghamton, NY from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., the first Friday of each month, excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period.   Applications must be picked up and returned by the applicant.

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must have a high school diploma, a General Equivalency Diploma (G.E.D.) or five years of trade-related experience.
  • Must be physically able to perform the work required as determined by applicant's signed affidavit which includes:
  • Working with sharp objects, hazardous machinery, and possible exposure to loud noise and respiratory irritants. It may also include prolonged lifting, standing, walking, and repeated squatting and/or bending.
  • Working under exposure to temperature extremes such as being outside on winter days or inside in confined areas where high temperatures can be reached can also be expected as part of everyday activity.
  • The lifting and/or moving of heavy objects and equipment, and working off ladders and scaffolds at protected heights is also expected.
  • Must have valid driver's license - apprentices will be required to operate sponsor's vehicles.
  • Must have a telephone that they can be contacted at.
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from worksites throughout jurisdiction and to and from related instruction classes which includes the following:
    • Broome County - Entire county.
    • Chenango County - Entire county with the exception of the Townships of Sherburne, Columbus, and New Berlin.
    • Tioga County - Townships of Richford, Berkshire, Newark Valley, Tioga, Owego, Barton, and Nichols.
    • Delaware County - Townships of Sidney, Masonville, Walton, Tompkins, Deposit, Hancock, and Colchester.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner.  Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability or marital status.  Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs.  Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
