Plumbers and Pipefitters Recruit Apprentices

Binghamton, NY (February 08, 2012) -

The Plumbers & Pipefitters Joint Apprenticeship Committee of Binghamton, Local Union #112, will conduct a recruitment from March 5, 2012 through February 4, 2013 for four plumber-steamfitter apprentices and two steamfitter apprentices, State Labor Commissioner Colleen C. Gardner announced today.

Applications can be obtained at the Local Union #112, 11 Griswold Street, Binghamton, NY, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., the first working Monday of each month, excluding legal holidays,  during the recruitment period.  Applicants can get more information on how to apply on the Union's website, the web address is http://www.ualocal112.org/.  All applications must be received no later than February 4, 2013.

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old and sign affidavit attesting to such - proof may be required.
  • Must have a high school diploma or general equivalency diploma (G.E.D), as recognized by local school authorities, and sign affidavit attesting to such - proof may be required.
  • Must be physically able to perform the work required as determined by a physician's examination, including passing a drug test after selection, at the committee's expense, prior to indenture.
  • Must be physically able to perform the work associated with the trades, as indicated by a signed affidavit for physical performance, which includes the following:
    • Working with sharp objects, hazardous machinery, and possible exposure to loud noise and respiratory irritants. It may also include prolonged standing, walking and repeated squatting and/or bending.
    • Working under exposure to temperature extremes, such as outside on cold winter days or inside in confined areas in the hot summer.
    • The lifting and/or moving of heavy objects and equipment, working off ladders and scaffolds, and working in wet and muddy conditions. The minimum lifting requirement is 77 pounds.
  • Must have reliable transportation to work sites and related instruction classes.
  • Must be able to work regularly at varying heights up to 150 feet.
  • Must provide military transfer or discharge form DD-214, if applicable.
  • Must be able to purchase text material for use in related training classes, as required. The total cost for all text materials is approx. $850. Note: Text materials are provided free of charge, except for replacement text materials or those students wish to write in or use for reference guides in the field.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner.  Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability or marital status.  Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs.  Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
