Roofers Recruit Apprentices

Binghamton, NY (December 22, 2011) -

The Roofers Local 203 Joint Apprenticeship Committee, Binghamton Area I, will conduct a recruitment from February 6, 2012 through February 8, 2013 for two roofer apprentices, State Labor Commissioner Colleen C. Gardner announced today.

Applications will be available at the Roofers JAC office at 32 West State Street, Binghamton, NY, from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period. 

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must be physically able to perform the work required, as determined by a trade-specific affidavit signed by the applicant, which includes:
    • Working with sharp objects, hazardous machinery, and possible exposure to loud noise and respiratory irritants.
    • Prolonged standing, walking, and repeated squatting and/or bending.
    • Working under exposure to temperature extremes, such as outside on cold winter days or on roofs in the hot summer.
    • Lifting/and or moving of heavy objects and equipment, working off ladders and scaffolds, and working at extreme heights.
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from work sites and related instruction classes.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner.  Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability or marital status.  Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs.  Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
