Sheet Metal Workers Recruit Apprentices

Elmira, NY (November 14, 2012) -

The Area Sheet Metal Workers Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee of Elmira, Local Union #112, will conduct a recruitment from November 19, 2012 through November 15, 2013 for 10 sheet metal worker apprentices, State Labor Commissioner, Peter M. Rivera, announced today. 

Applications will be available at Local Union #112, 1200 Clemens Center Parkway, Elmira, NY from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, except legal holidays, during the recruitment period.

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must have a high school diploma or general equivalency diploma (G.E.D.) as recognized by local educational authorities.
  • Must be physically able to perform the work required as determined by an affidavit for physical performance for the sheet metal trade, which includes the following:
  • Working with sharp objects, hazardous machinery, and possible exposure to noise and respiratory irritants.
  • Prolonged standing, walking, repeated squatting and/or bending.
  • Working under extreme temperature exposures (temperatures may range between 0 degrees to 140 degrees), or inside confined areas (such as a boiler room) where high temperatures can be reached.
  • The lifting and/or moving of heavy objects and equipment (up to 100 lbs.) and working off ladders and scaffolds at unprotected heights, which may exceed 50 feet.
  • Must have a valid New York State driver's license-apprentices will be required to operate company vehicles.
  • Must have a reliable means of transportation to and from worksites and related instruction classes.
  • Must submit to drug screening at the committee's expense, if selected for the program.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner.  Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
