Plumbers & Steamfitters Recruit Apprentices

Orchard Park, NY (December 30, 2011) -

The Joint Apprenticeship Committee for Plumbers & Steamfitters, Local Union #22 of Western New York, will conduct a recruitment from February 7, 2012 through February 5, 2013 for three steamfitter and three plumber apprentices, State Labor Commissioner Colleen Gardner announced today.

Applications can be obtained at the Local Union #22, 3651 California Road, Orchard Park, NY, from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., the first Tuesday of each month, excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period. Applications will also be available during normal business hours at the NYS Department of Labor offices in Jamestown, Olean, Albion and Dunkirk. Applications will be accepted only at the Local Union #22 during the same schedule as indicated above.

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must have a high school or general equivalency diploma (GED) recognized by local school authorities.
  • Must be physically able to perform the work required as determined by attesting that he/she can physically perform work duties.
  • Must have valid NYS driver's license in order to operate company vehicles.
  • Must be a resident of the Local # 22 geographic jurisdiction for at least one year:
    • All Townships in Erie and Wyoming counties (Zone A)
    • Genesee County-Townships of Alabama, Oakfield, Elba, Pembroke, Batavia, Darien and Alexander (Zone A)
    • All Townships in Niagara County (Zone B)
    • Orleans County - Townships of Yates, Ridgeway and Shelby (Zone B)
    • All Townships in Cattaraugus and Chautauqua Counties (Zone C)
    • Allegany County - Townships of Allen, Alma, Amity, Angelica, Belfast, Bolivar, Caneadea, Centerville, Clarksville, Cuba, Friendship, Genesee, Granger, Hume, New Hudson, Rushford, Scio and Wirt (Zone C)
  • Must take and pass a drug test at the sponsor's expense after selection as an apprentice.
  • Must pass a qualifying battery basic "WORK KEYS" assessment test - Applied Math and Reading.
    **If tentatively selected, the applicant will be required to produce any documentation of facts stated on the application, including high school diploma or equivalent, within fourteen days of receiving an acceptance letter.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability or marital status.  Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs.  Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
