"Small-town" development along Middle Country Road
|
Suffolk
|
|
04-14-2006
|
Town of Brookhaven (Suffolk County) officials announced a plan to renovate a
five-mile-long stretch of land along Middle Country Road (Route 25) between
Coram and Ridge, one of the most dangerous stretches of road on Long Island.
The land-use plan proposes creating mixed-use commercial centers with
landscaped pedestrian walkways and greater density than typical suburban
sprawl. Proponents hope these measures will give the new development a
"small-town feel". The proposal includes incentives to encourage
property owners to cooperate: greater density means higher profits – and higher
property tax revenues. (Newsday – April 14, 2006)
