Brookhaven National Laboratory Suffolk 04-02-2009 Brookhaven National Laboratory will break ground this Spring 2009 on a new $912 million x-ray called the National Synchrotron Light Source II. It will be the world's most powerful x-ray, ten times more powerful than any other world-wide and will function as a super powered microscope allowing scientists to work with objects to the billionth of a meter. The NSLS II will create hundreds of jobs and attract scientists from around the world to the Upton lab. The project should be completed by 2014. The project received $150 million in stimulus money toward the buildings that will house the ring shaped apparatus. (Newsday, April 2, 2009)
Road Construction from Federal Stimulus Money Nassau 04-19-2009 The first round of Federal stimulus money from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) has begun arriving on Long Island. According to the Nassau County Commissioner of Public works, the county has already received about $30M, which will be used for "bridge reinforcement, road improvements, repaving and rehabilitation, and building bicycle and pedestrian paths." this first round of funding. Route 110 Bus Route Suffolk 04-16-2009 The towns of Babylon and Huntington want to develop a bus line along Route 110 that would connect with a Farmingdale train station, giving commuters to one of Long Island’s business hubs an option to leave their cars at home. Tomorrow Babylon Supervisor Steve Bellone and Huntington Supervisor Frank Petrone, will announce a request for proposals to examine the zoning requirements and develop a model of how the rapid bus network could be integrated into the thoroughfare. The supervisors envision Route 110 would need bus-only light signals, bus lanes, better pedestrian walkways, lighting and shelters . (LI Biz Blog, 4/16/09)
