East End Wine Industry Suffolk 01-03-2011 Several wineries on Long Island’s east end (Suffolk) are now selling their high-end wines in China, thanks to a company in Beijing called Beijing New Long Island Co, established exclusively to import wine from Long Island. The company was started in early 2010 by a Chinese woman named Jing Li, who developed a taste for Long Island wines during the preceding four years while living in New York City. Already the company has imported several thousand bottles of Long Island wine worth several tens of thousands of dollars, and business is only expected to grow. (Newday, January 3, 2011)
Energy Kitchen Nassau 01-07-2011 Manhattan-based low-calorie/healthy restaurant Energy Kitchen hopes to open 6 eateries on Long Island "within the next few years". The first three in Carle Place, Great Neck and Glen Cove (all Nassau) have aleady been spoken for (by entrepreneur Jessie Giordano of Glen Cove. No opening dates were given. Frequency Electronics Inc Nassau 01-07-2011 Uniondale (Nassau)-based designer and manufacturer of "high precision timing, frequency control and synchronization products" Frequency Electronics Inc. has a contract extension with the federal government worth about $12 million for a “high capacity secure communications satellite program”. This additional award to an existing multi-year contract brings the total contract value to over $20 million.

Jesco/John Deere Suffolk 01-24-2011 South Plainfield, NJ-based heavy construction equipment supplier Jesco announced plans to open a John Deere dealership in Deer Park (Suffolk) later this year. The dealership will sell and lease bulldozers, backhoes and other earth-moving equipment. (Newsday, January 24, 2011)
Leviton Manufacturing Co. Suffolk 01-20-2011 Melville (Suffolk)-based electrical component manufacturer Leviton has a contract with Ford to produce home chargers for their new line of alternative energy vehicles, the Ford Focus Electric. Lifetime Fitness Nassau 01-19-2011 Health club Lifetime Fitness a new club in Syosset (Nassau) on January 19. The club includes full spa, salon, indoor and outdoor pools, personal trainers and nutrition coaches. (LI Business News, January 19, 2011)
Ultimate Game Sports Complex Suffolk 80(Est.) 01-07-2011 A private developer is moving ahead with plans to build a gigantic sports facility in Central Islip (Suffolk) to be called the Ultimate Game Sports Complex. The $20 million facility will include "private indoor and outdoor fields for baseball, soccer, lacrosse and football" and will creat 75 to 85 permanent jobs. (Newsday – January 7, 2011)

Blessed Sacrament Elementary School Nassau 01-12-2011 The Catholic Diocese of Rockville Center will close Blessed Sacrament Elementary School in Valley Stream (Nassau) in June 2011. The school’s enrollment fell from 265 students in 2005 to 157 students currently. This is the third Catholic school to close on Long Island in the past year.
