Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist

Description:

The Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist uses counseling and psychotherapy to treat mental, emotional and behavioral disorders and ailments within the context of marital, relational and family systems and to treat marital, relational, and family systems to prevent and ameliorate dysfunctions. The marriage and family therapist assesses and treats nervous and mental disorders, whether affective, cognitive or behavioral, which result in dysfunctional interpersonal family relationships with families, couples, pre-marital and other relationships.

Certification Requirements:

An applicant must have a graduate degree in marriage and family therapy, 1,500 client contact hours of supervised experience, be of good moral character and pass the national licensing examination.

Recertification Requirements:

Triennial registration requires completion of application and fee set in law.

Age Requirements:

At least 21 years of age.

Education and/or Experience Requirements:

Must have a graduate degree in marriage and family therapy or an allied mental health field with equivalent content, as determined by the Department and 1,500 hours of supervised experience, acceptable to the Department.

Fees:

$345 application fee includes $170 for initial triennial registration period.

Examination Requirements:

National examination from the Association of Marriage and Family Therapy Regulatory Boards.

Examination Description:

Examination is given during three test windows at year at test sites across the U.S. and determines minimal competence for entry to the practice of marriage and family therapy (www.amftrb.org).
