Occupational therapists are licensed rehabilitation care professionals who work to restore or improve physical abilities, promote behavioral changes, adapt surroundings, and teach new skills; the goal is to have the individual achieve her or his best physical and/or mental functioning in daily life tasks. Occupational therapists provide these services on the referral or prescription of a physician, physician assistant, or nurse practitioner.
Occupational therapy assistants provide treatment according to a plan developed by or in collaboration with a licensed occupational therapist. They must work under the supervision of a licensed occupational therapist or a licensed physician.
An applicant must file an application for licensure/registration with the New York State Education Department, Office of the Professions, to practice as an occupational therapist in New York State. Applicant must be of good moral character.
Applicant must be 21 years of age.
Applicants must meet education requirements specified by the New York State Education Department.
Applicants must meet examination requirements specificed by the New York State Education Department.
The fee for licensure for occupational therapy is $294.
The fee for a limited permit for occupational therapy is $70.
The fee for authorization for occupational therapy assistant is $147.
There is no limited permit for occupational therapy assistant.
