Ultrasonic Testing Technician

Description:

An ultrasonic testing technician performs non-destructive testing of welded steel members using the principles of ultrasound.

Licensing Requirements:

An applicant must be certified by the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) to perform ultrasonic testing on NYSDOT bridge projects. Certification must be renewed every 5 years.

Age Requirement:

There is no minimum age requirement.

Education and Experience:

There is no minimum Education and Experience requirement.

Examination Requirements:

Must pass the Ultrasonic Test administered by the New York State Department of Transportation.

Examination Description:

The examination consists of three parts: a closed book multiple-choice section (25%), an open book problem-solving session (25%), and a practical exam involving the examination of welded steel plates (50%). The total length of all three exam parts is 6 hours. Applicants must score a minimum of 70 on each of the three parts but must achieve a minimum overall score of 80 when the three respective scores are averaged together in order to be certified.

Limited Permit Requirements:

No limited permit is issued.
