Ultrasonic Testing Technician
Description:
An ultrasonic testing technician performs non-destructive testing of welded steel members using the principles of ultrasound.
Licensing Requirements:
An applicant must be certified by the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) to practice ultrasonic testing on NYSDOT bridge projects. Certification must be renewed every 5 years.
Age Requirement:
There is no minimum age requirement.
Education and Experience:
To be accepted for testing, applicants must submit a resume demonstrating a minimum of 2 years of work experience in the field of ultrasonic testing. Acceptable experience includes work performing fabrication quality control or weld inspection. The Transportation Department may accept education as a substitute for experience. Acceptable education includes an associate degree or higher in non-destructive testing or welding technology, or successful completion of a training course which meets the requirements of the American Society of Non-Destructive Testing (ASNT). Evidence of certification in quality control may also be accepted, such as Level II Certification from the ASNT or certification as a Certified Welding Inspector from the American Welding Society.

Examination Requirements:
Must pass the Ultrasonic Test administered by the New York State Department of Transportation.
Examination Description:
The examination consists of three parts: a closed book multiple-choice section, an open book problem-solving session, and a practical exam involving the examination of welded steel plates. The total length of all three exam parts is 6 hours. Applicants must score a minimum of 70 on each of the three parts and achieve an overall score of 80 when the three respective scores are averaged together.
Limited Permit Requirements:
No limited permit is issued.

As of July 31, 2008, there were 45 certified ultrasonic testing technicians in New York State.
