Q: What is NY.GOV ID?

A: NY.GOV ID is a system created by the NYS Office for Information Technology Services. It is used to create and store Usernames and Passwords. Currently, you can use the same NY.GOV ID to access online services from some NYS government agencies. For example, if you create a NY.GOV ID through the Department of Labor (DOL) and then want to use the Online Tax Center of the Department of Taxation and Finance or online services at the Department of Motor Vehicles, you can use the same NY.GOV ID Username and Password for all three agencies. Once the NY.GOV ID system is fully implemented, you should be able to use the same NY.GOV ID for online services at all NYS government agencies. If you already have a NY.GOV ID Username and Password before you sign up with the DOL, we will assign that Username and Password to your DOL account.

Please note that a NY.GOV ID that is created for an individual cannot be used to access online services for businesses, and an ID created for a business cannot be used to access online services for individuals. Also, each NY.GOV ID requires a unique e-mail address (the same e-mail address cannot be used for a business and an individual).

Q: Why is the Department of Labor doing this?

A: The DOL is supporting a statewide effort to allow web users to sign in with the same Username and Password to access online services across NYS government agencies. It will create a better online experience for you and increase your security, since you will no longer need to provide confidential data to sign in for online services. Currently, you can use the same NY.GOV ID to access online services from some NYS government agencies. Once the NY.GOV ID system is fully implemented, you should be able to use the same NY.GOV ID for online services at all NYS government agencies.

Q: Will this hold up my UI benefits?

A: Creating your NY.GOV ID with a new Username and Password will not delay your UI benefits.

Q: Why might I have to enter my Social Security number more than once?

A: When we process your initial application for UI benefits, we also verify that your Social Security Number (SSN) is correct and really yours.  This step ensures your protection from identity theft.  Once your application is successfully processed and you sign in with a NY.GOV ID, you will not have to enter your SSN again.
