Child Labor

If You Are 12 or 13

On a Farm

Minors 12 and 13 years old who have farm work permits (AT-25) to pick berries, fruits or vegetables, may work when the child is not required to be in school. You may work:

  • Up to 4 hours in a day
  • Between 9 AM and 7 PM from June 21 through Labor Day
  • Between 9 AM and 4 PM the rest of the year

You must either:

  • Be accompanied by a parent/guardian or
  • Present written consent of parent/guardian
    to employer

You need working papers (AT-25), except when employed:

  • By your parents on the home farm
  • At other outdoor work not connected with a business

Newspaper Carrier

All newspaper carriers from ages 11 through 17 must have a permit (AT-23).

Minors 12 and 13 years old may work as newspaper carriers to homes or places of business, when the child is not required to be in school. They may work:

  • No more than 4 hours in a school day
  • No more than 5 hours in a non-school day
  • Not before 5 AM
  • Not after 7 PM or 30 minutes before sunset, whichever is later

They must carry the permit while working.
